Upcoming funding opportunities in Health

Summer is almost here, which also means that new calls will be published soon :)  – it is time to get prepared. The official call publication will be in July, but some of the draft work programmes are already available online. For example, if you are interested in Health related research, you can find the 2012 orientation paper on the Cordis website.

These upcoming calls and priorities will be introduced more in detail at the Health Info Day in Brussels 9thJune and if you are in Brussels, why not join the Access4EU Health info session in the evening the 9th June where funding opportunities from several countries will be presented.

Get prepared – get ready

Many new FP7 calls will be published in July, so it is time to get prepared! This is what we did at the proposal preparation course this week. It was 2 days full of FP7; call analyze and proposal preparations, technical issues, administrative issues, basically anything related to FP7. Many questions and many answers – nice discussions. I hope to get many emails next year with success stories  :)

FP7 was for the daytime and in the evening we enjoyed some good wines and sightseeing  in Budapest.

This was the last proposal development course for the spring semester, but there is still the Summer Academy in July – a full week covering all project life cycle from preparation to final reporting and audit. I promise lots of funding opportunities and FP7 together with a good time at the lake with boat trip and winetasting and nice dinners in the summer evenings. Wants to join for a week at the Balaton?

FP7 Event Budapest

We are organizing a conference and networking event on the FP7 MidTerm Evaluation, to take place on June 16 to 17. The event will provide participants with the opportunity to share their business activities and project ideas with potential partners. There will be project presentation opportunities and a poster session to facilitate event network activities.

The background

The results of the FP7 Mid-term evaluation were published at the end of 2010. The report developed by the Expert Group highlights the strengths and weaknesses of the programme, foresees changes/trends and formulates ten recommendations.

The improvement of FP7 and preparation of the NEW programme supporting research and innovation continues during the Hungarian Presidency. The public consultation on the Common Strategic Framework will close in May 2011.

The FP7 Mid-term Evaluation Event will present the findings and engages parties to discuss the implications for the future.

So far participants from the following countries have registered:
Belgium, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Italy, Lithuania, Malta, Norway, Spain, Sweden, and the United Kingdom

Structure of the event

To involve the participants to the discussions, the event is organised in various sessions. The first one in the first day will focus on introducing the results of the interim evaluation in an interactive way. In addition, round-table discussion sessions will be held with a panel of experts giving their advice and experiences, taking questions from the audience as well as posing questions to them. Smaller groups will have the opportunity to discuss and focus on issues of great interest. The organisers will also provide networking opportunities to the interested participants.

FP7 Evaluation conclusions

It is a fact that some of the best ideas will never receive funding. Every year thousands of excellent ideas are turned down because the proposals are inadequately developed. Evaluation is generally considered fair with good quality, but all procedures can be improved. And what about the proposals that are positively evaluated? Each year hundreds of European project managers and researchers realise the hard way that winning a European project is actually only the beginning. Grant Agreements are lost during negotiations and cost statements are rejected due to mistakes that could have been avoided by proper project management.

Meet the experts and lecturers coming from the top 50 organisations (industry and academia) participating the 7th Framework Programme.

Beautiful Budapest

Budapest is a very beautiful city. I was reminded once again yesterday evening when we went for wine tasting and a guided tour with the participants in the Proposal Development course.

It was magic; the Heroes’ Square is always so impressive, especially in the dark. We passed many of the highlights in Budapest before making the last stop at the Fisherman’s Bastion. It’s a terrace in neo-Gothic and neo-Romanesque style, which is very beautiful itself and from there you have a wonderful view over the Pest side.  It is as always difficult to catch the beauty through a lens but I did a try; let me share some photos with you.

Why May doesn’t have more days?

Why May doesn’t have more days?

Every year I wish May would have some more days; not only for the nice weather, the longer days and promising air of summer arriving. But also to manage all things to do at work, conferences to attend and documents to finish before summer.

There are conferences, workshops, there is reporting and wrapping up the first half of the year. This year, there are also all the preparations for the Mid-term evaluation of FP7 conference in Budapest in June. Maybe to avoid delaying August and the summer break, a solution could be to take days from the grey and cold February and add them to the month of May. But with all administrative mess that move would create, a more feasible solution could be to do more work in February in order to be better prepared when May arrives. That would help me not only to manage to finish all the work without too much overtime, but also allow enjoying the nice outdoor bars in Budapest, the warm evenings, and the good spring mood of the people. Do you think I’ll remember?
